Big Trout Lake First Nation is in mourning after a house fire left five residents dead.
Chief Donny Morris says in a statement that they are in utter disbelief as every community member is connected and impacted.
Though the identities of the deceased have not yet been released, Chief Morris expresses his sincere condolences in this troubling time.
Meanwhile, Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler released a statement.
“We were saddened to learn of the tragedy this morning and our prayers are with the victims, their families and the entire community during this difficult time. This is a devastating loss for the community. We have assured Chief and Council that we will support them in any way possible as they grieve in the days and weeks ahead.”
Big Trout Lake, also known as Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, is located 600km north of Thunder Bay.
The deaths come as the province’s chief coroner is investigating Ontario First Nation fire deaths over the last 10 years.
Dr. Dirk Huyer has convened a “Coroner’s Table”, comprised of people who are examine the deaths in detail.
