Expert Team Chosen To Reinvestigate Deaths

Authorities are another step closer to reinvestigating nine Indigenous deaths in Thunder Bay.

Ontario Chief Coroner Dirk Huyer explains a team of officers has been assembled.

He says the investigative team will include members of the city police and Nishnawbe Aski Police Service.

The lead investigator is retired OPP Detective Superintendent Ken Leppert.

Huyer adds the purpose of looking into the deaths again is so the victim’s families can “have the best answers…to fully understand the deaths.”

The reinvestigation of those nine deaths was recommended by a provincial police watchdog.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler says the families involved “have suffered for a long time” and this will help them “to get the answers they were looking for.”

The nine deaths are:

1. Jethro Anderson
2. Curran Strang
3. Kyle Morrisseau
4. Jordan Wabasse
5. Shania Bob
6. Aaron Loon
7. Christine Gliddy
8. Marie Spence
9. Sarah Moonias
