Nominations for candidates in school board and city council elections are now open in municipalities across Ontario.
Several candidates have already announced their intentions to run in elections.
In the contest for Thunder Bay’s next mayor, realty broker Moe Comuzzi announced her candidacy in mid-April.
Central to Comuzzi’s platform so far is a promise to uphold and continue the work of the city’s Smart Growth Action Plan, which she lauds.
Former Chronicle Journal Publisher Clint Harris has announced his plan to run as well.
Harris is championing a “Housing First” policy on homelessness, which prioritizes getting unhoused individuals into homes as a foundational pillar of addressing the issue.
“They get a safe place to live. It reduces all the things that come with living on the streets… Drug addiction, crime, including murder… I don’t understand how this is so difficult for people to understand,” he says.
On Friday, Volker Kromm, the former Executive Director of the Regional Food Distribution Association submitted his papers to launch his own mayoral campaign.
Kromm is focused on affordability as he enters the fray.
“The young people want affordable housing. We have a lot of housing going on, but it’s not necessarily in the price range of either young people or seniors,” he says.
City Councillor Trevor Giertuga has also reportedly registered as a candidate for mayor.
Thunder Bay’s elections represent an ongoing story. More to come…
