A new SOS van could soon be out helping those living on the street, thanks to a $2,630 donation from local OPSEU members.
Shelter House accepted the cheque from union officials Tuesday morning.
Executive Director Michelle Jordan says the shelter has been fundraising for the new vehicle, and this donation is a big leap towards their goal.
She explains the shelter is “extremely close” to replacing the van.
“Hopefully, very soon, we’ll have an announcement.”
Shelter support worker and OPSEU local Vice President Joseph Everett explains that they put the donation together at a conference in January, explaining union members wanted to help out after the SOS van broke down.
Local and regional union leaders passed the hat around, and “In 20 minutes we’d raised over $2,600,” Everett says.
While the money was meant to pay for repairs to the van’s transmission, Jordan explains that the van was reaching the end of its life and it would be cheaper to get a new vehicle.
