Does Christmas Cheer matter? Ask former Councilor Rebecca Johnson, it does.

Former Councilor Rebecca Johnson is an inspiration, a community leader but did you know, she was also a recipient of a Christmas Cheer hamper? She joined Danny and John this morning during the 36 Hours of Cheer to talk about how that very hamper 55 years ago changed the path of her life.

Rebecca Johnson has dedicated more than four decades to public service, leadership, and community building in Thunder Bay. Serving as an at‑large councilor from 2003 to 2022, she became one of the city’s longest‑serving representatives, championing initiatives in economic development, diversity and inclusion, accessibility, and age‑friendly programming. Beyond her council work, Rebecca has contributed to countless organizations including the Lakehead Public School Board, Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, Diversity Thunder Bay, and Age Friendly Thunder Bay, while also mentoring women in politics and advocating for seniors’ care, immigration, and environmental stewardship. Her impact spans grassroots groups, business boardrooms, and provincial and federal committees, reflecting her unwavering commitment to civic engagement.

In addition to her municipal leadership, Rebecca has built a career as a consultant through her firm Rebecca Reports…for the Record, and has been a familiar face in local media, hosting “Community Clipboard” for 20 years and currently producing and hosting Age Friendly Thunder Bay on Shaw Spotlight. Widely recognized for her approachable style and ability to connect with people, she has received numerous awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the City of Thunder Bay Achievement Award, and the Charles J. Carter Lifetime Business Achievement Award. In 2021, Age Friendly Thunder Bay renamed its senior award in her honour, a testament to her lasting influence. Rebecca’s legacy continues to inspire through her leadership, volunteerism, and dedication to making Thunder Bay a stronger, more inclusive community.
