DeMille Warns Of COVID-19 Variants

We should know by Friday if Thunder Bay’s District moves back to lockdown.

The medical officer of health Dr. Janet DeMille says as hard as the city is working against the high active COVID-19 count, much of it is caused within the community’s more vulnerable, such as the homeless.

“There are individuals who have households, or friends, or families who have taken people in, and then it spreads within those households,” says DeMille.

The medical officer adds she cannot disclose where the isolation centres are that work to help keep vulnerable people protected.

As she looks into the future, it does not look too good for Thunder Bay if any COVID-19 variant makes its way here. Dr. DeMille points out she is very concerned for March with the district’s current high number, as the more contagious strains of the virus move around the province.

“I think the reality is that we won’t be immune to that. So it could very much happen here, and it could be quite devastating if that were to happen here, on top of what we are already seeing,” points out DeMille.

The medical officer of health cannot stress over and over the importance of health measures to stop the virus.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
