Death Of Indigenous Man Under Scrutiny

There are concerns about the circumstances surrounding the suspected suicide of a 19-year-old Indigenous man on the Lakehead University grounds. The late September incident is now the subject of an investigation by the chief coroner of Ontario.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler indicated the death occurred shortly after the man had been released from the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre across the street.

Ontario Chief Coroner Dr. Dirk Huyer confirms his office will be examining the death with the hope of learning exactly what happened and whether “there is anything they might identify… that may raise an issue.”

Hospital officials say an internal investigation of the incident “concluded appropriate actions were taken and that the right decisions were made by clinical staff based on the information provided to them and the patient’s presentation.”

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
