CUPE Strike Averted

City employees aren’t going on strike Monday morning.Members of CUPE Local 87 voted Friday to accept the city’s last offer in recent negotiations.

The new deal is retroactive 5 years and covers some 700 inside and outside municipal workers whose last contract expired two years ago.

Spokesperson Karen Martin says they’ll head back to the bargaining table in three years time.

Changes in the contract include around 70 to 90 workers in sewer and water and pollution control going to shift work schedules.

Martin says the bargaining team did not recommend the contract to its members soley on the shift work issue saying its bad for employees quality of life but adds they accept members decision.

Martin says small positive changes were made to their members benefits plan.

CUPE Advises its Members Vote to Accept City’s Offer

November 4, 2016– The Canadian Union of Public Employees advised the City this evening that its Union membership has voted to accept the City’s offer.

“CUPE employees play a vital role in providing services to the community,” said Norm Gale, City Manager. “We are pleased that the Union has voted to accept the City’s offer for a new collective agreement and that the parties have prevented any disruption to a number of key services to residents. It’s a credit to the bargaining teams on both sides.”

The terms will be disclosed after the deal is presented to City Council for ratification on November 14, 2016.

CUPE Local 87 represents more than 700 inside and outside City workers.
