Councillors Support City Clerk’s Advocacy

Unanimous support to make their voice heard.

Council now in the process of drafting a letter, urging more consultation from the province with municipalities in terms of changes to the Municipal Elections Act.

At Large Councillor Mark Bentz feels the province will listen considering we’re in a democracy…

“They may have [valid] reasons that they feel very strongly about the changes they made. [At the end of the day] they may read [the letter] and say ‘thank you but we’re going to continue on this path’,” remarks At Large Councillor Mark Bentz.

Bentz knows municipalities take their direction from the province.

The Monday vote didn’t include raising ranked balloting in time for the next election in 2022.

Neebing Ward Councillor Cody Fraser supports helping City Clerk Krista Power, and feels getting involved in municipal politics hasn’t been a secret for the Conservatives under Doug Ford.

“We can point to the example of [what they did to] Toronto City Council [to prove the point that] this is something they’ve done. That aside, from the clerks perspective and based on councils support, we feel more consultation is needed [on any changes],” adds Fraser.

The measure was a 2018 mid-election move to trim the size of Toronto City Council from 47 planned wards to just 25. It was a measure that faced tremendous opposition, but was deemed constitutional by the Ontario Court of Appeal has ruled, overturning a lower-court decision.

City Clerk Krista Power making it clear that Voters List and alternative methods of voting should be considered first before any other alterations.
