The highlights from the Thunder Bay City Council Composition Review Committee public survey have been released.
The survey, launched in January, asked the public about their interest in seeing changes to the makeup of council, and it received 659 responses.
84 per cent of respondents felt ward boundaries should be reviewed, and this was the most agreed upon response amongst participants.
72 per cent of respondents feel the current size of council is inappropriate, but 62 per cent of respondents saw value in at-large councillors, and 56 per cent of respondents felt the ward system adds value, creating a difficult situation when trying to find potential adjustments.
Nearly 60 per cent of respondents felt the current compensation for councillors is appropriate, and almost 52 per cent of respondents did not want to see full-time City Councillors.
“Based on the results of this survey, we have learned that there is a desire from the public to see some change to the size and composition of City Council,” said the Chair of the Committee Rebecca Johnson. “We will take this information, determine some next steps on how we can further engage with the public, and see exactly what changes they want.”
