Continued push for four-lane Trans Canada Highway in northwestern Ontario

Political pressure continues to be applied on the federal government for financial support toward the twinning of the Trans Canada Highway in northwestern Ontario.

Kenora-Kiiwetinoong MP Eric Mellilo is among those calling for the project to be considered one of national interest.

He says he has been advocating the twinning of the highway for nearly seven years.

He says other Canadians also see the importance in doing so.

“Recently I presented a petition to this House signed by Canadians from every single province calling on the government to support the improvements to the highway through northwestern Ontario,” says Melillo.

“Canadians know that our national highway holds national interest, and it’s time that the Liberals recognize it too.”

Some sections are being twinned, with work starting elsewhere.

A rash of highway closures and fatal collisions this year has led to increasing lobbying of the provincial and federal governments.

Representatives with the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association and the Federation of Northeastern Ontario Municipalities were in Ottawa recently to promote the case of a twinned highway to the Prime Minister and the federal Transportation Minister.
