Concern Over Future Of Bombardier

With two major contracts at the local Bombardier plant coming to an end next year, the head of the union there has some concerns.

Unifor’s Dominic Pasqualino notes the Metrolinx bi-level car contract ends in the summer and the Toronto Transit Commission streetcar deal will be complete by the end of 2019, but after that there is nothing.

Pasqualino points out, as it stands now, there is no work scheduled beyond 2019, but he’s hoping there can be a new contract announcement very soon.

He admits though, there is no indication from Bombardier any new contract signing is on the horizon.

The TTC has been critical in the past about the speed in which the local plant has been producing streetcars, and while that may have hurt its reputation somewhat, Pasqualino says production has improved and “the TTC is coming around.”
