City weighs ice rink closures to accomodate staff schedules

On Tuesday, Thunder Bay’s Quality of Life standing committee considered a proposal to close the Grandview Arena on Mondays and the Neebing Arena on weekdays during the day.

The closures will not be absolute: the ice rinks will still be available for exceptions, such as tournaments or as temporary replacements for closures at other rinks.

The rink closures were proposed due to staff scheduling challenges. Previously, staff were taking back-to-back night shifts to maintain the schedule.

By following the proposed scheduling changes, staff will be able to alternate their scheduled night shifts, improving their work-life balance.

The standing committee passed the proposal, but it still needs to be debated by city council.

Should the changes be implemented, they will take effect on October 12.
