The city is out with the results of a recent survey on the proposed events centre.
61% of people surveyed are in support of building the centre, with 33% opposing the project.
The survey was conducted by Ipsos Reid and asked 1000 residents, over the age of 18, by telephone what they thought about building the events centre.
30% of people asked also had concerns about parking, while 9% of people surveyed weren’t aware that the project was in the works.
The proposed events centre was a hot topic this evening, as 1-million dollars needed in order to move forward with a phase three report is on hold.
The money would come from the Renew Thunder Bay fund.
Councillor Rebecca Johnson says the money shouldn’t have to come from the fund.
Council will gather more information on the proposal and discuss it at their next meeting.
The Fort William Gardens could see some changes.
City council heard a report tonight which proposed removing the ice surface and seating, which would cost around 7-million dollars.
Mayor Keith Hobbs says if the city is building the new events centre, there’s no need for the refurbishment. City council will hear a new report in July.
The city’s Manager of Community Services is retiring. Greg Alexander is calling it quits after 21 years with the city. Alexander says he’ll enjoy his retirement with his wife.
May Street will also see some repairs. Council approved nearly 2.5-million dollars in road work tonight. The street will also be modified to allow for potential bike lanes in the future.
