Several new bike lanes are in place for the city. Council approved the addition of bike lanes to Grenville Avenue, Pioneer Drive, Valley Street, William Street and Winnipeg Avenue. Pioneer Drive will also have an additional lane created, designated for parking.
The city’s Lift plus transit service could soon have a panel to decide who can access the service. Lift plus is available for people who have disabilities, and can’t use city transit. The city will look further into implementing the panel and will report back to council.
The Court Street bridge will see some repairs. City council awarded a nearly 2-million dollar contract to K.A.Vanderzwaag Construction. The repairs include asphalt replacement and new guard railings.
Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Thunder Bay is the goal. The city is out with its annual Earthcare Sustainability plan, and they want to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emission levels from 2009 by 20 percent. They hope to achieve their goal by 2020.
Several awards are being handed out for Clean, Green, and Beautiful 2014. Waverly Park Towers, The Current River Greenway Lookout, and True Grit consulting took home awards.
They were given the awards for completing environmentally friendly building renovations.
A program that would see roads closed to vehicles and would only allow people is in the works. City council heard a proposal last night that would see Algoma Street from John Street to Boulevard Lake, closed to vehicles two days of the year.
The goal of the Open Streets project is to provide space for people to partake in physical activity, and to celebrate the culture of the Algoma and Bay corridor. The city will look into the project and will come to council with a report at a later date.
