A vote on the event centre is set in stone for later this week.
At last night’s meeting, councillors accepted the latest report, which means they’ll now debate next steps at a special meeting on Thursday.
In an email to our newsroom, Councillor Rebecca Johnson says she intends to vote against the proposed project under the current funding formula, as she’s not prepared to use gas tax money.
Johnson expressed her opposition at council, saying she’d like to know how they plan to make up for those dollars, because they’re not new dollars from the feds.
She also notes the city is already $288 million in debt, adding she’d like to know the cost of borrowing for the event centre.
Meanwhile, Councillor Linda Rydholm says she’d like to know how the city plans to pay for the project up front, given that $21 million would be used over the next decade.
City administration notes it’s not likely senior levels of government will be able to confirm funding by the end of March, or even by the end of April. (File photo)
