Canada Day this Monday…..let’s talk about “Canadian INVENTIONS”.

From this morning’s “TODAY IN THE BAY”:

Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of “Canadian Confederation” that happened on July 1st, 1867. It was originally called DOMINION DAY, and it was renamed back in 1982.

Here’s some conversation starters for you this weekend. How about some “CANADIAN INVENTIONS”? Did you know that butter tarts / Nanaimo bars are 100% Canadian.

AMBROSIA APPLE is from B.C.

INFANT CEREAL…PABLUM dates back to the 30s.

TELEPHONE HANDSET in 1878.

WALKIE TALKIE in 1942.

Other Canadian inventions: snowblower / the egg carton / the lawn sprinkler / paint roller / basketball / 5 pin bowling / Instant Replay (which was actually made for Hockey Night In Canada in 1955). The “electric wheelchair”. A Canadian cartoonist co-created SUPERMAN in the 30s.

AND……..CANOLA OIL. (discovered and developed at the University of Manitoba in the 1970’s). The name comes from “can” for Canada, and “ola, low acid” for oil. NOW YOU KNOW.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!!
