Beyond the Badge: How the TBPS Gala Plans to Bring Thunder Bay Together

When Chief Darcy Fleury talks about community, it’s never just about policing. It’s about people — the ones who show up, step forward, and make Thunder Bay stronger together. That spirit is what inspired the Thunder Bay Police Service to launch its first-ever Gala, a night dedicated to honouring local heroes and empowering the community they serve.

“It’s time to begin a new tradition — one that brings the Thunder Bay Police Service and community together to celebrate,” says the organizing committee. “It’s a night to bring people together — officers, civilians, community leaders, and partners — to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the shared commitment we have to building a safer, stronger, and more connected community.”

The inaugural TBPS Gala will take place Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Italian Cultural Centre, bringing together community members, leaders, and partners for an evening of gourmet dining, live musical entertainment, and exciting live and silent auctions.

The committee says the event is designed to create connection as much as celebration. “A sense of community and connection,” they explain. “This gala gives our members and the community the chance to meet as neighbours, partners, and fellow citizens.”

For Chief Fleury, the event is about more than recognition — it’s about redefining what it means to serve. “By recognizing both officers and community members who contribute to public safety, we celebrate the idea that policing is not something done to a community, but with it,” he says. “When we listen to each other, share a meal, and celebrate shared values, we build understanding — the foundation of trust. That’s how this Gala strengthens the bond between our service and the people we’re sworn to protect. Also, by raising funds for Special Olympics Thunder Bay and the Boys and Girls Club of Thunder Bay, we are creating life-changing opportunities for children and youth in our city.”

He adds that the message behind the event is a simple but important one. “Your police service is made up of real people who care deeply about this community and are part of this community,” Fleury says. “They are committed to serving and protecting with integrity and compassion, and the work they do deserves to be celebrated. It’s also a reminder that policing is a partnership, and that community collaboration strengthens community safety.”

Funds raised from the event will benefit Special Olympics Thunder Bay and the Boys and Girls Club of Thunder Bay, two organizations whose missions reflect the same spirit of service and inclusion that the Gala celebrates. Both groups say the partnership is about more than fundraising — it’s about opportunity, connection, and helping local youth reach their full potential.

Chief Fleury says the Gala is also an opportunity to honour those within the Service who work tirelessly, often behind the scenes. “This is about recognizing an entire team of dedicated professionals who show up, day after day, to serve with integrity, courage, and commitment,” he says. “Every officer, every civilian staff member, every person behind the scenes plays a role in keeping our community safe. Their collective effort is what makes our service strong, and it’s that spirit of teamwork and shared responsibility that will be honoured.”

He speaks with clear pride when he reflects on the people he leads. “I see the professionalism, courage, and compassion shown by our officers every day — often without recognition,” he says. “Behind the badge are people who take pride in serving with integrity, who face difficult situations with resilience, and who are constantly striving to do better — for the people and community they serve.”

Asked what community service means to him personally, Fleury doesn’t hesitate. “It means being there for people — not just when something goes wrong, but every day,” he says. “It’s about helping, listening, and working together to solve problems and strengthening trust. It’s about making a real difference in people’s lives, and always remembering that we’re here to serve.”

Of course, no gala would be complete without good food — something the Chief admits he has a particular appreciation for. When I asked about the menu, he grinned. “While the menu isn’t set just yet, it’s fair to say guests can expect to enjoy the food as much as the entertainment and camaraderie.”

When I pressed a bit further — asking what his typical lunch looks like – he responded that “It’s true that I enjoy a variety of foods and appreciate quality meals,” he said. “I enjoy trying different types of foods and have been to almost every restaurant in Thunder Bay. Having said that, my go-to lunch is an old-fashioned ham and cheese sandwich.”

Food, he adds, has a way of doing more than satisfying hunger — it creates connection. “There’s something about sharing a meal that naturally brings people together,” he said. “At the Gala event, food will be about more than what’s on the plate — it’s about the conversations that happen across the table, the laughter, the stories, and the connections. In policing, we often meet people in moments of crisis. But at the Gala, we will gather in a spirit of community to celebrate, to reflect, and to strengthen the bonds that make us stronger together. And yes, sometimes, that starts with something as simple as breaking bread.”

When asked to sum up what this event stands for, Fleury doesn’t hesitate: “Honouring heroes. Empowering community.”

It’s a simple phrase — but it captures everything the night is meant to be: a celebration of service, a commitment to youth, and a reminder that Thunder Bay’s greatest strength has always been its people.

In the end, the Gala is about more than one night. It’s about recognizing the people who choose to serve — and remembering that a strong community is built when we stand behind those who stand up for us. Supporting our police service isn’t just about gratitude; it’s about partnership — neighbours, families, and local organizations working together to make Thunder Bay safer, kinder, and more connected.
