Bear Clan Cuts Ties With Thunder Bay

The head of a Winnipeg based street patrol group is washing his hands of any involvement in Thunder Bay.

James Favel is executive director of the Bear Clan, and tells us there’s no need to have any affiliation in this city anymore, since a new local group called the Sleeping Giant Patrol is starting a chapter.

“More power to them, you know, we’re not trying to duplicate services, and I think they’re on a good path to getting going.”

He salutes the Sleeping Giant Patrol for taking over from where the old Bear Clan left off.

“I’m just happy someone is doing something. We’re not paternalistic about the program, we want people to have the benefit of it, they don’t have to call themselves Bear Clan, or identify themselves as Bear Clan.”

The executive director adds he is moving on.

“Just this morning I woke up, and there was another request from Thompson, to start up out there. And like I said, St. Catherines is coming on board, there’s just more and more… I’m going to Sioux Lookout on the 21st.”

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
