A $200-million class action lawsuit has been filed against the Ford government over their decision to cancel the basic income pilot project in Lindsay, Hamilton and Thunder Bay.
Toronto lawyer Stephen Moreau says they are alleging the government broke a contract to residents who were counting on monthly payments.
“They are allowed to breach the contract, nobody is saying that they are forced to keep the basic income pilot going, but we always say there are contractual consequences to ending a contract. Nobody would do business with the government if a government could just decide well we don’t want a contract anymore.”
We’ve reached out to the provincial government for comment on the lawsuit.
They’ve issued a statement saying “Ontario has been served with a statement of claim for a proposed class action regarding the wind down of the basic income pilot project. As this matter is subject to litigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
