Attempted theft of police vehicle leads to charges

A man is facing charges after hopping into a police cruiser while an officer was occupied with their duties.

On Thursday, officers were on Tupper Street conducting an investigation.

While on scene, an officer watched a man approach an unmarked police vehicle.

The officer told the man that the road was closed and he would have to go around, but the suspect then got into the driver’s seat and attempted to take the vehicle.

The officer was able to remove the suspect from the vehicle and, with the assistance of another officer, placed him under arrest.

As a result, a 32-year-old has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, assaulting police, resisting arrest, and failure to comply with probation.

The accused appeared in court on Friday and they remain in custody with a future court date.
