United Way’s annual Great Lighthouse Rescue set to take place

An annual fundraiser in Thunder Bay is set to take place.

United Way’s third annual Great Lighthouse Rescue is getting underway on Wednesday.

Fundraising castaways are going to be “stranded” at Thunder Bay’s lighthouse.

The goal is to raise enough money to be rescued and returned to shore.

This year’s event will see Honourary Commander Cliff Friesen return with a $25,000 matching challenge.

“I’m delighted to be back supporting the Great Lighthouse Rescue this year,” said Friesen. “This event is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together for a day of fun all while supporting people in need. Times are tough for many, but it’s events like these that remind us that better is possible.”

All funds raised are supporting local.

Money will be used to support students, families, schools, support programs and more.

The Royal Canadian Navy will deliver the castaways to and from the lighthouse.

Once the fundraising goal of $50,000 is hit, the castaways will be returned to shore.

“We’re excited to see the community come together again for the Great Lighthouse Rescue,” said the CEO of United Way of Thunder Bay, Albert Brulé. “It’s an unforgettable day of teamwork, creativity, and generosity; all in support of building a stronger Thunder Bay.”

The event is getting underway at the Navy Batshed at 65 Marina Park Drive at 10:00 a.m., running to roughly 4:00 p.m.

Have BBQ Will Travel and Sleeping Giant Brewing Co. will be on-site providing refreshments.
