Air Canada removing carry-on baggage from economy fares

Air Canada is making changes to its Economy Basic and Economy Comfort fares starting in January 2025.

For Economy Basic tickets purchased from January 3 onward, customers will no longer be able to bring a carry-on bag. Instead, they can only bring one small personal item, like a purse or backpack, when traveling within Canada, to and from the U.S. (including Hawaii and Puerto Rico), and to and from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. However, if you’re connecting to an international flight, you can still bring a carry-on bag along with a personal item.

Starting January 21, Economy Basic tickets will include a free seat assigned at check-in. However, if you want to change that seat, you’ll have to pay a fee. Air Canada will still make sure that families and those needing special assistance can sit together, just like they do now.

For Economy Comfort customers, there’s good news. Starting January 3, 2025, you’ll be able to check two free bags instead of just one when traveling anywhere with an Economy Comfort fare.
