Thunder Bay mornings always have their own flavour, but today’s edition of Mornings in the Bay came with an extra dusting of powdered sugar. During our Friday edition of “Just A Sec,” the phone lines lit up—and on the other end was none other than Derek, calling straight from the legendary Holland Bakery.
If you know Thunder Bay, you know Holland Bakery isn’t just a store. It’s an institution. A place where generations have grabbed their first donut, their favourite loaf, or a treat “just because.” So when Derek called in, the studio energy shifted instantly. You could practically smell the donuts through the speakers—fresh glaze, warm dough, and that unmistakable aroma that makes you forget whatever diet you promised yourself last night.
Danny and John didn’t stand a chance. The game paused, the nostalgia kicked in, and suddenly the show turned into a warm, funny, slightly desperate plea for baked goods. Derek shared stories about the bakery’s long history—how it’s been a cornerstone of the community, how families have passed down their favourite orders, and how the place still feels like stepping into a memory.
And yes, the begging happened. Danny and John made no attempt to hide it. One donut. Any donut. A single ring of fried happiness. Derek—good‑natured as ever—played along like a pro.
It was one of those moments that reminds you why local radio matters. A simple call, a local business, a couple of hungry hosts, and suddenly the whole city is smiling on the way to work.

**NOTE: A big thanks to Bay listener Cindy, who dropped off donuts, and other treats from Holland Bakery this morning. THANK YOU!!!
