Federal government unveils $20M local food support fund

The federal government has introduced a new $20‑million program to support food banks and community groups.

Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald announced the Local Food Infrastructure Fund: Community Support Stream, which is part of the National Food Security Strategy.

The federal government says the program is aimed at improving access to safe and nutritious food for vulnerable Canadians.

Agriculture and Agri‑Food Canada said the Community Support Stream uses a further‑distribution model that relies on a limited number of not‑for‑profit organizations with established networks.

Those organizations will then select and fund local groups that deliver food assistance.

The department said eligible initial recipients can apply from June 19 until July 9.

MacDonald said the goal is to build on the work already being done by food banks and community organizations.

“By supporting organizations on the front lines, we are helping ensure families can quickly access safe and nutritious food,” he said in the release.

Parliamentary secretary Sophie Chatel said the investment will help trusted organizations expand their reach and respond to the unique needs of the communities they serve.

Local MP Stephane Lauzon said the funding will strengthen community networks and give groups in the Outaouais region more tools to support residents facing food insecurity.

Marie‑Pier Chaput, communications director at Moisson Outaouais, said the need for food assistance is reaching unprecedented levels and frontline organizations require concrete resources to keep up.

She said the federal investment will help strengthen food security in communities across the country.
