It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie Dean Culbert, who peacefully passed away on May 20, 2026, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, at the age of 93. Leslie was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to northern Ontario in the early 1950s. He joined the Ontario Provincial Police, serving in the Thunder Bay, Longlac, and Nipigon detachments. Later, he joined the Lakehead Harbour Police, where he served as Chief for several years.
After a successful career in law enforcement, Leslie transitioned to the trucking industry in the early 1970s. He started in the logging sector and then formed a long-haul transport trucking company with his brother-in-law, hauling throughout Canada and the United States until his retirement in the late 1990s.
Leslie is survived by his daughter, Leslie (Paul Malcolm), and his sons, Terry (Carolyn Lehto) and Brad. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Dawn (Dave), and his grandchildren, Kelsey and Colton Culbert, and Shae Malcolm (Steve Borysiewicz). Leslie’s extended family includes his sister, Zelda Stentiford, and his brother, Lorne Culbert. He was predeceased by his wife, Olga Marion Culbert, after 68 years of marriage; his son, Dean Culbert (Dawn); his brothers, Don and Gordon Culbert; his brother-in-law, Merlyn Stentiford (Zelda); and other relatives.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare providers at the Hospice and Palliative Care unit of St. Joseph’s Care Group, as well as those at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). We would also like to extend a special thank-you to the second-floor staff at Southbridge Lakehead Manor for the exceptional and compassionate care they provided to our father.
In accordance with Leslie’s wishes, the immediate family will gather at St. Andrew’s Cemetery to inter his ashes.
