Annual ten-mile race runs along waterfront

Despite a rainy morning, runners in Thunder Bay’s Fire Fighters Ten Mile Road Race set out on Monday to participate in one of the city’s oldest traditions.

The road race is in its 90th year, and has been a tradition almost every year since 1910.

Runners can take on the sixteen-kilometre route either as individuals or in relay teams of up to five.

The 2026 race drew 800 individual runners and 350 relay runners.

Drivers looking to get around the city on Monday may face some difficulty getting to and from the waterfront, as the race runs along Simpson Street, Fort William Road, and Water Street, before reaching the halfway point at the north core marina via the overpass.

2026 is a milestone year for the race, as for the first time ever, para athletes are participating in the event.
