William Hacio, formerly of MapleCrest Towers, Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully at Hogarth Riverview Manor, May 13, 2026, at the age of 95. Born in Thunder Bay, August 2, 1930, he was the son of the late Ann and Dan (Dmytro) Hacio (who had immigrated from Ukraine in 1922).
He married Debby Maltese in 1954 and had 5 children. In 1947, at the age of 17 years, Bill entered the plumbing trade, and five years later he became a Master Plumber. In 1958 “Hacio Bros. Ltd. Plumbing and Heating” was started with his brother Vic.
Four years later Bill and his brother Vic started Thunder Bay Heating & Ventilation, and eventually also an Electrical Business. The business was later sold, and in 1978 Bill started Willhac Mechanical Ltd. Bill also operated and owned Super Sonic Car Wash and a Chibb’s Restaurant Business.
In 1987 Bill started MapleCrest Condo Development- finishing it’s completion one year later July 1, 1988. Tenants moved in August, 1988.
Bill was the Founding Member of the Mechanical Contractors of Ontario, a Life Member of the Thunder Bay Mechanical Contractors Association, and past President of the Thunder Bay Mechanical Contractors Association. He served on the Thunder Bay Contractors Committee for the Thunder Bay District Regional Hospital, served the ONT. Apprentice Committee, and was a past Member of the Kinsmen K-40 for 15 years.
Bill’s favourite time was spent at Lake Shebandowan surrounded by family and friends, fishing, and sitting on his front deck enjoying the view with his wife Debby. He also enjoyed his vacations to Florida with his family and grandkids, and his trips to Arizona, Spain, Italy, and Hawaii.
William was predeceased by his wife Geraldine (Debby) (nee Maltese) (2020), son Christopher Hacio (2019), parents Dmytro and Ann Hacio, and brother Victor. He is survived by his four daughters, Lois Hacio, Lori (Don) Paterson, Debra (Doug) Vanderwey, Kelly (George) Badanai, daughter-in-law Daniella Hacio, 12 grandchildren- Will Menzies, Isabella Paterson, Max Paterson, Sclater Paterson, Taylor Vanderwey, Colin Vanderwey, Ross Vanderwey, Amanda Hacio-Kumarage, Melissa Hacio, Andrea Hacio, Spencer Badanai, and Neave Badanai, 5 great grandchildren, sister Jeanette Bodnar, sister-in-law Penny Stovel, and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank-you to Dr. S. Kennedy for his life-long care, and to all staff who cared for Bill at Chartwell, Hilldale, St. Joseph’s Palliative Care, and at Hogarth Riverview Manor. Cremation will take place and a private service will follow. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Thunder Bay Cancer Centre or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
