Ontario now #1 in mining in Canada

Ontario’s focus on the mining industry is working.

That ‘s according to the province’s Energy and Mines Minister Steven Lecce.

He says by reducing red tape, mines are getting built faster in Ontario.

“We started as the second slowest in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), a benchmark no Canadian should be proud of,” Lecce said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“After relentlessly pursuing a reform agenda, we’ve now, after implementing a suite of permanent reductions, we’re #2 on Earth and #1 in Canada for the first time.”

Lecce adds the Ontario government is also announcing its intent to bring forward an additional package of red tape reduction to further streamline mining approvals.

“We may have emerged as the second best on Earth for mining investment and #1 in Canada, but our premier’s commitment today is to bring forth an additional suite of legislative reforms, a serious packet to help accelerate the early exploration…the advanced exploration and the expansion of existing mines.”

Lecce suggests Ontario is Canada’s top mineral producer, generating $13 billion worth of minerals in 2024, with gold accounting much of that production.
