It is with heavy hearts that the family of Karen Barabash (née Br oadbent) announces her passing on April 30, 2026 at the age of 78.
Born in Kapuskasing and later residing in Dryden, Karen moved to Thunder Bay in 1981 with her husband, Gary, and daughter, Nicole. From her first marriage, Karen had two daughters, Lori and Nicole Latour. Lori tragically passed away at the age of four due to complications from spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Though heartbroken by this loss, Karen remained a steadfast source of strength and love for Nicole.
Karen’s love for her daughter never wavered. They shared a strong, unbreakable bond. A true pillar of support, Karen was always present for Nicole’s activities and endeavors.
Karen was a strong and intelligent woman. Well-read and knowledgeable, she rarely lost a game of trivia. Her quick wit kept others on their toes, while her tender and kind nature was evident in her constant care and concern for others.
A dedicated and hardworking individual, Karen truly enjoyed her career and continued working until declining health forced her into early retirement. She would have given anything to return to work.
In 2017, Karen suffered a debilitating stroke and moved into long-term care at Bethammi Nursing Home, where she resided on the second floor. She was often seen enjoying time with her daughter and her beloved little dog, Emma, who would sit on her wheelchair as they strolled together. The staff at Bethammi provided exceptional care, and the family extends heartfelt thanks for their compassion, dedication, and even the beautiful hairstyles that brightened Karen’s days.
Karen is survived by her loving daughter, Nicole (Trish), and her brother, Brian (Judy). She was predeceased by her husband, Gary; her daughter, Lori; her parents, Viola and Charles; and her brother, David.
In keeping with Karen’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Karen’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Mom, you will be forever missed. I will always cherish our memories and the time we shared as I grew into adulthood. I will carry with me the values and lessons you instilled in me, always.
