Earlier this week, Thunder Bay City Council hosted the 48th Annual Citizens of Exceptional Achievement Awards. This is a celebration of the volunteers who quietly, consistently make this community stronger.
One of the highlights every year is the Youth Award, that honours young people under 21 who’ve spent at least two years giving back — above and beyond those mandatory 40 hours. They’re the next generation of community builders, and they’re already leading the way.

There were also honours for long‑serving volunteers through the Good Citizen Award, recognizing individuals with at least five years of service — and groups who’ve been giving back for decades.
And then there’s the big one: the Spirit of Thunder Bay Award. This special honour goes to someone who has spent at least 15 years pouring their time, energy, and heart into making this city better. It’s for the kind of person who doesn’t just volunteer — they inspire others to do the same.
In a world that can feel heavy, nights like this remind us that kindness is alive and well in Thunder Bay. These volunteers don’t do it for applause, but they absolutely earned it.
