Forty‑six years ago this week, a young Canadian named Terry Fox set out on a journey that would inspire the world. Standing on an artificial leg in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he dipped his foot into the Atlantic Ocean and began his Marathon of Hope—determined to run a marathon a day across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
Terry had lost his leg to bone cancer at just 18, but what he saw in the hospital—the courage of young cancer patients—lit a fire in him. With 18 months of training behind him, he started his run quietly, often alone in cold rain and sleet. But as he pushed west, the country rallied. Donations poured in. Crowds grew. Hope spread.
After 143 days and more than 5,300 kms, Terry was forced to stop his Marathon Of Hope, just outside of our city…when the cancer returned. He passed away the next year, but his legacy only grew stronger. Today, the Terry Fox Foundation and annual runs across Canada and the world, has raised over $900 million for cancer research.
