Mrs. Eeva Holopainen, age 87, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, March 9, 2026 at TBRHSC. Eeva was born in Kuopio, Finland on March 1938 and moved to Canada to join her husband on a new life adventure in 1960.
Eeva is survived by her husband of 68 years, Veijo. They met randomly, paired up by fate while ice skating at the age of 12. They were both only 19 when they married in August 1957.
Eeva also leaves behind a daughter Rita (Dean) and son John (Carrie) and her grandchildren Heather (Jason), Cathy (Cory) and Erik. She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren: Jordyn, Joshua, Suvi, Lilah, Serena and Sadie, who were each fortunate to have created their own special memories of Sauna Mummo.
Everyone was lovingly welcomed at her home or camp. Laughter laced with sarcasm was always on the menu, as well as strong coffee, fresh pulla and makkara. Mummo provided love and guidance to every generation drawing on and sharing her own life experiences. She never passed judgement on anyone, accepting everyone just as they were. She was sure to offer any support that she could, to anyone that needed it. It says so much about her memorable character that Cathy’s and Heather’s childhood friends all have such warm memories of Mummo.
The years in Longlac were busy years. Eeva worked at Weldwood and later became a self-employed cleaner whose services were sought by many. She enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends. She developed many special friendships in Longlac, particularly Ritva Torkko, Toini Halonen and Armi Korhonen. These friendships continue on today. I am positive mom is with Ritva having a huge belly laugh like they always did when they were together. Now they are busy together planning new adventures.
During times of illness or hardship over the years, Eeva had a magical and inspirational energy. She carried a positive attitude and always believed that “this too shall pass” and she firmly believed and instilled that better times were on the horizon.
A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held on Thursday March 19 at 11:00am at the Hilldale Lutheran Church. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Hilldale Lutheran Church would be appreciated.
Her laughter is etched in the hearts of everyone who met her.
Äiti ja Mummo, rakastamme sinua.
