State of Emergency declared on Nibinamik

The power is finally back on at the Summer Beaver or Nibinamik First Nation.

The community endured a winter power outage that lasted 5 days.

As a result, a state of emergency has been declared.

The power outage effected every aspect of community life, including schools, the grocery store, and food supplies.

Residents also struggled to heat their homes and protect their water lines from freezing.

Electricity from the community’s only diesel generating system was finally restored last Tuesday afternoon.

Medically vulnerable residents were finally evacuated on Tuesday as well.
