There’s nothing quite like sliding into clean sheets at the end of a long day – that crisp, fresh, hotel‑bed feeling that makes you sigh out loud. So why don’t we chase that feeling more often?
Most of us spend around eight hours a night in bed. Some of us sleep, some of us scroll, some of us stare at the ceiling wondering why our brains won’t shut off. But no matter what you’re doing, your sheets are collecting everything – dead skin cells, sweat, body oils, germs, pet dander, and yes… dust mites. Lots of dust mites.
According to cleaning experts, all that buildup can trigger allergies, irritate your skin, and even contribute to acne. So the big question is: how often should you actually wash your sheets?
The Official Recommendation
The Good Housekeeping Institute says the sweet spot is once a week. If life gets busy, skipping a week is fine – but don’t push it past two.
And if you’ve got pets in the bed, allergies in the house, or someone who sweats like they’re training for a marathon in their sleep, you might want to wash them even more often.
Pillowcases? Those should be washed weekly no matter what. They collect oils, makeup, sweat, and even a little drool — and your face is way more sensitive to that stuff.
But Then… We Asked YOU
We opened the text line on Country 105 and asked how often you wash your sheets. Most of you were in the “weekly-ish” zone. A few admitted to stretching it to two or three weeks.
And then… There was that one text.
“Honestly? I wash mine once a year.”
Once. A. Year.
Let’s just say that did not sit well with one of our Country 105 listeners, who immediately called in to our Country 105 talk & text line.

If You’re Wondering What Else Needs Washing…
Here’s the quick guide:
- Pillowcases: Weekly
- Duvet covers/comforters: Every 2–3 months (more if pets sleep on them)
- Mattress protectors: Every 1–2 months
- Mattress: Vacuum every 3 months
How to Wash Sheets the Right Way
If you’re going to do it, do it right:
- Treat stains first (especially pillowcases with makeup).
- Don’t overload the washer — sheets need room to move.
- Use the hottest water safe for the fabric to kill germs.
- Tumble dry on low to avoid shrinking and wrinkling.
- Don’t mix sheets with towels — they dry at different speeds.
The Bottom Line
Clean sheets aren’t just about comfort – they’re about health, skin, allergies, and yes, basic human decency. Weekly is ideal. Two weeks is the limit.
A year… well… that’s a choice.
And if you’re the once‑a‑year texter, we still love you – we’re just sending you a gentle, supportive, non‑judgmental nudge toward the laundry room.
