Brian Philip Marchand, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away peacefully with his loving daughter Rhonda, her husband Jonathan, and his cherished granddaughters Brooklynn, Valkyrie, and Gwendolyn by his side.
Brian is survived by his daughters Rhonda Marchand (Watts) and family, Cheryl Marchand (Ellis) and family, and Leanne Marchand. He was predeceased by his father, Phillip Marchand (1946); his mother, Mary Panas (Marsh) (1996); and his stepfather, Edward Marsh (2015).
Brian was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and relocated to Thunder Bay with his family at a young age. Following the passing of his father, his mother Mary opened Marchand Grocery on John Street in Port Arthur. Brian spent much of his youth delivering groceries and newspapers throughout the neighbourhood, forming lasting connections with many local residents.
During high school, Brian met his future wife, and together they raised three daughters. His career included time at the Marathon paper mill before beginning long-term employment at the Thunder Bay paper mill, where he retired as Head Electrician in the mid-1990s.
From an early age and throughout his life, Brian enjoyed spending time with family and friends and working on mechanical projects. He had a lifelong passion for snowmobiles and cars, which culminated in his final pride and joy—a meticulously built 1928 Pontiac, Chief of the Sixes, street rod. He spent countless hours on this project alongside his close friend Oscar, the two of them building their cars together in Brian’s garage.
Brian was known for his ability to fix just about anything, often while delivering his own version of “Brian 101” on how things should be done. Throughout his years as a Grandparent, he deeply cherished his relationship with his daughter Rhonda, his son-in-law Jonathan, and his beloved granddaughters – his “sweeties” – who brought him immense joy and comfort.
Papa will be deeply missed.
A Hot Rod tribute cruise and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
