Be A Tom: The Saying That’s Going Viral

Share the “Be A Tom” graphic on your socials and keep the positivity flowing

Every so often, a moment on live radio turns into something bigger than we could have imagined. This week on Country 105, one of our listeners named Tom called in – and his warmth and genuine kindness sparked something special.

It started with a simple contest. To win lotto tickets, listeners were supposed to text in the word “Jackpot.” But Tom broke the rules in the best way possible. Instead of typing the magic word, he sent us kind words: “Thank you very much and keep up the fantastic programming!” That small act of gratitude stood out. It reminded us-and everyone listening-that kindness is contagious.

The very next day, Samantha texted in for the same contest. Dee told her, “Go ahead and text in whatever you like.” Inspired by Tom’s example, she broke the rules too. Instead of “Jackpot,” she wrote: “Be a Tom.” She explained that Tom sounded so kind on the radio, we should all try to be like him.

And just like that, a new saying was born. Be A Tom.

What does it mean to Be A Tom? It’s simple. It’s the opposite of being a “Karen.” Instead of demanding, complaining, or cutting people down, being a Tom means showing kindness, offering understanding, and lifting others up. (And just to be clear-I know many wonderful people named Karen. It’s unfortunate that the name has been caught up in this stereotype.)

Why “Be A Tom” Matters

  • Kindness first: like listening, thanking someone, or offering encouragement-can change someone’s day.
  • Community spirit: In a world where negativity can dominate, “Be A Tom” is about choosing compassion and care, especially in our Thunder Bay community.
  • A new shorthand for good energy: Just like “Karen” became shorthand for entitlement, “Tom” is becoming shorthand for generosity and grace.

How You Can “Be A Tom”

  • Smile at the cashier who’s been on their feet all day.
  • Let someone merge in traffic without honking.
  • Call a friend just to check in.
  • Support local shops and makers with your holiday shopping.
  • Share encouragement instead of criticism when someone’s trying their best.

The Legacy of a Listener

Tom didn’t set out to start a movement-he just called in, spoke from the heart, and reminded us what kindness sounds like. But now, “Be A Tom” is more than a catchphrase. It’s a challenge, a reminder, and a way to make our days brighter.

So next time you’re tempted to complain, snap, or scroll past someone in need, pause and think: How can I ‘be a Tom‘? Chances are, he’d choose kindness. And so can we.
