Lea Niittula (Toivonen)

1930 – 2025

It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Lea Niittula, who passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the age of 95, with her granddaughter by her side.

Lea was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Matti (Matias) Niittula; and by her daughter, Ellen (Bob) Bengtsson. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Richard (Elena); grandchildren, Krista (Alan) Cheeseman, Michael Bengtsson, and Derrian, Haleigh, and Paige Niittula; great-grandchildren, Megan and Sierra Cheeseman; and great-grandchildren Carli, Chloe and Londyn Bengtsson.

Lea will be remembered as fiercely independent and strong-willed, with a no-nonsense spirit that carried her through life. She remained active and engaged until the very end, leaving an example of resilience and determination for her family and friends.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to her nurse, Michelle; and PSW, Love for their exceptional care and compassion.

A private family interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, where Lea will be laid to rest beside her husband, Matti.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Lea’s memory may be made to Christ Lutheran Church.

She will be missed and forever loved.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.
