Ground broke on Saturday for the building planned to house Thunder Bay’s historic Chippewa Park Carousel.
The $2.2 million construction project is designed to be a climate-controlled building for hosting the city’s old C.W. Parker Carousel year-round.
The carousel was built in 1915 by C.W. Parker and came to Thunder Bay in 1934.
Generations of city residents used the carousel before it fell into disrepair, but in recent years, The Friends of Chippewa Park has raised funds to restore the carousel into working order.
The Friends of Chippewa Park also raised $1.25 million for the building that will house the carousel when completed. The remaining funds allocated came from the three branches of government.
Construction is expected to be completed by May 2026.
