Echo Gumkowski

Born Helen Echolene Isabella Snider – June 14, 1956

Passed Away – September 18, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Echo Gumkowski (née Snider) on September 18, 2025.

Echo was known for her kind, fun-loving, full-of-life spirit and her hardworking nature. She shared a very special bond with her twin brother, Jack—surprising everyone, including their mother, when “the twins” arrived in 1956. Together, they grew up as beloved figures of the Brock Street neighbourhood.

Her early years were spent at Francis Street Elementary, Kingsway Park and Selkirk High. Echo went on to live a life rich in family, friendship, and community. She is survived by her loving husband, Roman, stepson Brian, (Nicole), stepdaughter Lindsey (Shawn) and cherished grandchildren Jett and Ayla, who brought her endless joy. She also leaves behind her brothers Elgin (Luana), Quentin (Judy) and Jack, her sister Hope(Colin), her sons Jason and Christopher from a previous marriage, and many extended family members.

She was predeceased by her parents Jack and Helen Snider, her sister Dawn, and her father-in-law Alex (“Papa”).

Echo spent many of her winter vacations in Mexico, enjoying rest and fun in the sun with family and friends. She especially treasured her most recent trip this past March, when she managed to travel on her own to Mazatlán to spend time with her sister and brother-in-law.

Echo had a gift for bringing people together. She was the heart of family gatherings, always planning and hosting with enthusiasm and warmth—whether it was backyard bocce tournaments, Thanksgiving dinners, or Christmas and Easter celebrations. Halloween was especially magical at her home, where for more than 20 years she delighted children with not just candy, but toys and games, creating lasting memories for hundreds in the community. Many still remember her as “Mrs. Halloween.”

For over 30 years, Echo worked at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, primarily in the Emergency Department, where she was respected and loved by coworkers who fondly referred to her as their sister/grandmother. She mentored, supported, and befriended many during her career, and in her final days, she was surrounded by colleagues who came to share their love and gratitude.

Echo also cherished hosting her annual Christmas Market at home, where friends and coworkers gathered to celebrate creativity, laughter, and community.

She faced her health challenges in recent years with remarkable courage. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to Drs. Chan, Ramchandar, Nelson, and especially Dr. Storkson, as well as the dedicated nurses and staff, for their compassionate care.

Echo’s vibrant spirit, generosity, and love of life touched everyone she met. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

We love you and miss you always.

A celebration of life will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Thunder Bay District Humane Society.
