Louis Piccolo

Louis Piccolo was born October 22, 1931, in Fort William and died at Southbridge Roseview on September 13, 2025.

Louis told many stories — both factual and tall tales — of growing up in Westfort. He was educated at St Martin’s School, where he particularly remembered the nun who directed the choir, and instilled in him a love of singing. After completing grade 10, Louis went to trade school in Toronto to learn plastering, a trade in which he would work until retiring about 20 years ago. His experience in Toronto was another rich source of stories, particularly around using his limited funds to buy standing-room tickets to Leafs’ games at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Which brings us to his favourite thing: sports. In his youth, Louis played hockey, football, and baseball. Later, for many years, he umpired baseball games in the city. And he spent many years tenpin bowling in leagues and with friends. Of course, you could always catch him watching sports on TV – not only watching his favourite sports, but you could even find him watching sports he didn’t really know anything about (a sport is a sport!).

He also enjoyed puttering in the yard, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, and reading the paper.

Louis was a lifelong member of St Agnes Parish and had been a member of Fort William Moose Lodge 844 since 1965.

Louis was predeceased by his wife, Marlene (2008); his parents, Giacomo and Maria Piccolo; his sisters, Mary Belluz, Verna Todd, Lillie Buset, and Dolly Belbas; his brothers, William, Sergio, and Aldo Piccolo; his brothers-in-law Art Belluz, Norman Todd, Aldo Buset, Mike Belbas, and Jerry Brinkmeier; his sister-in-law, June Piccolo; his niece, Marlene Hartnagel; and his nephew, Ray Belluz.

Louis will be remembered by his children, Richard, Cindy, and Dan (Ruth); his grandchildren, Eve, Gabriel, Saul, and Hope; his Italian greyhound granddog, Rain; and his many nieces and nephews.

Thanks to all the people who took such good care of Louis at Southbridge Roseview over the past five years. Special thanks to Joseph, his ‘boxing buddy’ who watched hockey with him and, although no longer working on the same home area, visited Louis several times in his final days. Thanks also to Kelly MacKay, who helped Louis with snow removal and lawn work when he could no longer manage by himself. And thanks to nephew Rob Piccolo and niece Tina Piccolo, who went above and beyond to help Louis when he became seriously ill a few years ago.

Funeral Services for Louis will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025 with family and friends gathering in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 12:10pm, celebrated by Father James Panikulam. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, with a reception held in the Church Hall afterwards. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, with Vigil Prayers offered at 7:00pm.

Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Louis to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
