Local conservation authority accepting applications for Shoreline Protection Program

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) has opened the application process for the fifth year of the Shoreline Protection Program.

The program offers eligible successful applicants professional restoration consultation, free native plants, and a personal planting plan.

The initiative is focused on lands along Lake Superior or one of the five major tributaries in Thunder Bay, with a goal of increasing aquatic and terrestrial habitat by rehabilitating and protecting sensitive shoreline and riverbanks.

The educational program helps teach residents about the best practices for shoreline stewardship while providing tools to implement the practices.

“The cumulative actions of all the lake and river users within a watershed decides the health of the watershed,” explained LRCA CAO Tammy Cook. “Our goal is to encourage landowners to contribute positively to the overall health of the Lakehead Watershed, starting at home.”

The LRCA offers additional resources to watershed residents on the stewardship section of their website, which can be found by clicking here.

“Whether planting trees or shrubs, implementing low-impact development on your property, or educating yourself about the best way to maintain your property, it is all of our responsibility to be Superior Stewards,” added Cook.

The program is operated with the help of funding from the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Reach out to stewardship@lakeheadca.com to apply.

Plant installation and maintenance are the landowner’s responsibility.

Applications for the Shoreline Protection Program are due September 5.
