City police reminding residents that low-speed vehicle are not permitted on roads

Thunder Bay’s police service is reminding residents that low-speed vehicles are not permitted on public roads.

A low-speed vehicle is an electric, four-wheel vehicle that is smaller and lighter than a regular car and has a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour.

These vehicles may have many similar features to a conventional motor vehicle, like seat belts, a steering wheel, pedals and a speedometer, but they have fewer safety features and do not meet the same safety standards.

The vehicles can be a hazard in traffic as they take up more space in a lane than a bicycle does, while also posing safety risks on sidewalks to pedestrians.

The vehicles may be marketed as mobility devices, but they are legislated as vehicles that are subject to the Highway Traffic Act.

Violations can result in Highway Traffic Act charges, fines, and driving suspensions or prohibitions.
