Strong shipping season continues at Port of Thunder Bay

The Port of Thunder Bay continues a strong shipping season following one of the strongest shipping seasons in decades last year.

Grain and potash volumes handled at Keefer Terminal have led the way so far in 2025.

The port also received just under 20,000 tonnes of phosphate fertilizer as well as the first seasonal shipment of steel pipes in April.

Cargo shipments from the beginning of the season to April 30 were 11 per cent higher than the 5-year average.

The 1.3 million metric ton cargo tally is down 9 per cent from the same period in 2024.

A total of 59 vessels had entered port between the start of the season and April 30, compared to 62 ships during the same period last year.

The 2024 shipping season was the best on record in more than 25 years.

The port supports the Canadian supply chain while generating jobs locally.
