The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation have recognized Thunder Bay.
They have designated the city as a 2024 Tree City of the World.
“The City of Thunder Bay is honoured to receive this recognition as a 2024 Tree City of the World,” said the Manager of Parks & Open Spaces, Cory Halvorsen. “Our commitment to urban forestry is reflected in our dedication to preserving and expanding our tree canopy. Trees play a vital role in our city’s environmental and social well-being, and we will continue to invest in sustainable initiatives that enhance the quality of life for our residents.”
The international honour recognizes cities that excel in urban tree care and planning.
The city met five key standards to earn the award: establishing responsibility, setting rules, assessing resources, allocating funds, and celebrating achievements.
The Tree Cities of the World program connects cities worldwide to share best practices in urban forestry.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was established in 1945 and leads global efforts to fight hunger and promote sustainable resource management.
The Arbor Day Foundation was founded in 1972 and is the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to tree planting, with over one million members.
It has helped plant over 350 million trees globally to combat climate change and promote sustainability.
