Scotties ‘gives us a chance to show off our community’: Boshcoff

The clock is ticking down to the start of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The event taking place at Fort William Gardens kicks off on Friday and is expected to draw a crowd from across the country.

“Anybody who underestimates this does not really realize what an amazing feather in our cap this is this is the real deal,” said Mayor Ken Boshcoff. “We should be very proud and I’m extraordinarily pleased, not only with our curling community but the organizers, who really work 365 days every year to make sure this type of stuff happens, we gotta be really proud.”

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission estimates the event will bring roughly $4.2 million to the local economy.

This marked the second year in a row the city has hosted a major winter tourism event with the Ontario Winter Games being held in the city last year.

“This really gives us a chance to show off our community, so we should be very proud and grateful,” added Boshcoff. “Coaches, scouts, and media come from all over the planet to see these things because curling is an international sport of a major scale, so this really gives us a chance to show off our community.”

The opening draw of the tournament is kicking off at 6:00 p.m.

A shuttle service is available to help get you to the game.
