Update: Thunder Bay councillor admits assault charge pending following “issue between brothers”

Police in Thunder Bay confirm that a city councillor is facing an assault charge.

Trevor Giertuga told city council during Monday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting, that it stems from an argument with his brother.

He said it escalated into something physical and his name will appear on a court docket in the near future.

“Months later, my brother Warren fabricated the events of the night to the Thunder Bay Police, in my opinion, to weaponize the judicial system by pursuing an assault charge against me,” he explained. “This was an issue between two brothers that many have experienced, but I haven’t heard of one that has gone to the point of pursuing charges, especially when the incident could be compared to a grade school wrestling match.”

According to the councillor, the altercation took place in June.

“I just want the public to know, so there’s no rumours out there on what this was. It was simply not simply, but it was an issue between two brothers, siblings and a family issue that should have stayed in the family but hasn’t.”

Giertuga is an At-Large Councillor, currently serving his seventh consecutive term on city council, having first been elected in 2001 representing the McIntyre Ward.
