Children’s Centre Thunder Bay launching new education campaign

A new education campaign is coming to Thunder Bay.

Children’s Centre Thunder Bay is launching it, and it is focused on adverse childhood experiences (ACE).

Adverse Childhood Experiences are defined as traumatic events occurring before the age of 18, such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, and household challenges.

“Research indicates that ACEs can lead to a variety of negative outcomes, including chronic health issues, mental health disorders, and diminished quality of life,” said Children’s Centre Thunder Bay in a release.

The Centre hopes the initiative will raise awareness, educate the public, and provide vital resources to mitigate the impacts of ACEs on children and families in the community.

“We believe that by educating the public about Adverse Childhood Experiences, we can create a ripple effect of positive change,” said the Centre’s CEO, Diane Walker. “Awareness is the first step in our effective strategy to mitigate the impacts of ACE’s, support those affected and prevent future occurrences.”

They will be holding free education workshops and training throughout the city and district, as well as public awareness events.

The Centre is also partnering with local schools, healthcare providers, and social service organizations to help address the challenges associated with ACE.

Funding for the initiative is coming through the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The program is underway and will run through 2025.
