Economic Development Commission launches new mural funding program

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission has announced a new funding stream aimed at developing street-art tourism in the city.

The Tourism Muralscape Initiative pilot program has been launched.

“Visitors travelling through the city are looking to explore accessible art and local galleries. They are often looking for new and exciting art installations to experience,” said CEDC CEO, Jamie Taylor. “The Tourism Muralscape Initiative aims to enhance outdoor art and culture experiences further expanding on Thunder Bay’s year-round tourist experiences.”

The program will provide up to $5,000 in funding to businesses or organizations that are interested in installing an outdoor mural in the city.

“Many visitors seek out murals and other public art installations that become shared widely on social media, generating greater positive destination awareness,” said the Manager of Tourism Thunder Bay, Paul Pepe. “Murals tell our stories, build our pride of place and contribute to a more beautiful and welcoming community.”

Murals funded through the program will be added to the city’s Tourism Tour App, with two tours promoting murals on both the north and south sides of the city.

Applications are currently open and will remain open until all of the funding has been used.
