Future tennis complex to be in media giants name

The future tennis complex at Chapples Park will be in the name of Rogers Communications.

Thunder Bay is one of four municipalities across Canada that’s received funding for the Year-Round Community Tennis Courts Program presented by Rogers including Markham, Hamilton and Calgary.

Locally, the project is expected to be completed by 2023-2024 for the fall and winter seasons at a total cost of $3.5 million dollars.

Cash from Rogers & Tennis Canada amounts to a $200,000 grant along with $1M from Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), $500k from Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor) and pending final signatures, $1.5M from the City of Thunder Bay. There is also an additional $300,000 being invested by private donors and businesses in Thunder Bay.

Ground was officially broken on Monday for the future six-court facility in a soil-turning ceremony.
